Note: Republished from the Fortnightly review, the Contemporary review, the Nineteenth century and the Cornhill magazine. "Spenser, the poet and teacher " first appeared in Dr. Grosart's privately printed edition of the works of Spenser. "Romeo and Juliet" republished form Cassel & co.'s edition de luxe, in which it served as an introduction.
The first "transcript" is from a manuscript report of Carlyle's Lectures, at the time not published in any other form; the second is an outline of an unpublished prose work of Shelley, with extracts from his manuscript.
