This prominent Connecticut magazine proposed to communicate religious information and instruction, and to defend and explain the doctrines and principles of the Episcopal Church. It contained extracts from foreign and American religious works, sketches relating to the church and its history; biographical sketches, book reviews, and missionary news. Columns included "The Commentator" and "The Watchman," and there were occasional anecdotes and poems. Cf. American periodicals, 1741-1900.
