It is the lifeblood of an intricate web of life in which insects figure prominently. The papers presented here consider the basic ecology and evolutionary history of saproxylic (dead-wood dependent) insects, and show how these species can be affected by human management of the forests where most of them live. Past management has not always been kind to saproxylic insects, and in some parts of the world this has harmed the fauna significantly. However, there is reason to think that continued research may in the future give land managers the technical tools to accommodate saproxylic insects. Whether societies will adopt these friendlier techniques remains to be seen, but we hope the information presented in this volume will encourage them to do so"--Pref.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="520" ind1="3" ind2=" "><subfield code="a">"In August 2004, the city of Brisbane, Australia, was host to one of the largest recent gatherings of the world's entomologists. Several thousand delegates attended the 22nd International Congress of Entomology, which featured a multitude of symposia that together covered a wide range of entomology-related topics. This special General Technical Report is based on papers presented in a symposium entitled 'Insect Biodiversity and Dead Wood.' It features contributions by scientists from around the world, and these contributions clearly illustrate our growing understanding of the entomological importance of dead wood.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="530" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">Also available on the World Wide Web.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="538" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">Mode of access: Internet.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Dead trees</subfield><subfield code="v">Congresses.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Coarse woody debris</subfield><subfield code="v">Congresses.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Forest insects</subfield><subfield code="v">Congresses.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="700" ind1="1" ind2=" "><subfield code="a">Hanula, James L.</subfield><subfield code="q">(James Lee),</subfield><subfield code="d">1955-</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="700" ind1="1" ind2=" "><subfield code="a">Grove, Simon J.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="710" ind1="1" ind2=" "><subfield code="a">United States.</subfield><subfield code="b">Forest Service.</subfield><subfield code="b">Southern Research Station.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="711" ind1="2" ind2=" "><subfield code="a">International Congress of Entomology</subfield><subfield code="n">(22nd :</subfield><subfield code="d">2004 :</subfield><subfield code="c">Brisbane, Qld.)</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="CID" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">005623394</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="DAT" ind1="0" ind2=" "><subfield code="a">20100105095911.0</subfield><subfield code="b">20111213000000.0</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="DAT" ind1="1" ind2=" "><subfield code="a">20120815122756.0</subfield><subfield code="b">2025-01-05T19:07:11Z</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="CAT" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">SDR-UMN</subfield><subfield code="d">UNKNOWN</subfield><subfield code="l">loader.pl-001-001</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="FMT" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">BK</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="HOL" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="0">sdr-umn005001182</subfield><subfield code="a">umn</subfield><subfield code="b">SDR</subfield><subfield code="c">UMN</subfield><subfield code="p">umn.31951d02716751h</subfield><subfield code="s">UMN</subfield><subfield code="1">005001182</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="974" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="b">UMN</subfield><subfield code="c">UMN</subfield><subfield code="d">20250105</subfield><subfield code="s">google</subfield><subfield code="u">umn.31951d02716751h</subfield><subfield code="y">2006</subfield><subfield code="r">pd</subfield><subfield code="q">bib</subfield><subfield code="t">US fed doc</subfield></datafield></record></collection>
