Used in this fashion, paradox can serve as an additional measure of effectiveness and assists in providing a basis for change in community colleges.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="520" ind1="8" ind2=" "><subfield code="a">The independent variables appeared to have little influence on respondents' perception of paradox. Only the trustee group displayed perceptions that clearly were influenced by some of these variables. Other groups were affected minimally, if at all.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="520" ind1="8" ind2=" "><subfield code="a">The responses indicated that respondents did perceive paradox in several important strategic decision areas, (Educational Delivery System and Student Products) although the evidence was selective and inconsistent across all areas. Nor were perceptions consistent among respondent groups. Divergence of perceptions occurred most commonly in the faculty group, and often in the trustees group, as well.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="520" ind1="8" ind2=" "><subfield code="a">The study surveyed trustees, executive administrators, middle administrators, and faculty at 170 community colleges to measure the extent to which they perceived paradox in their institutions. It also sought to determine whether perceptions of paradox were influenced by several independent, external variables including state pattern of higher education coordination and institutional characteristics such as age, size and location.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="520" ind1="8" ind2=" "><subfield code="a">This study examined the theory in the context of community colleges. It did not attempt to use paradox as a measure of effectiveness; rather it proceeded on the assumption that the presence of paradox in community colleges must exist before it can be used to assess effectiveness.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="520" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">A recent approach to assessing organizational effectiveness rests on the "paradox theory" as advanced by Kim Cameron.
